Tasmania is an island, and it is not too surprising that it has many endemic species, that is plants that grow naturally in Tasmania and nowhere else. Some of these are from drier areas, and typically have close relatives on the mainland. Most, however, are from the Tasmanian mountains and the west coast, where conditions are harsher or wetter than most of the mainland. Many of the endemic plants have strong Gondwanan affinities - they are descendents of the flora that would have grown on the Gondwanan supercontinent before it broke up into South America, Antarctica, Africa and Australia.
